Using a Martingale Collar Properly
A martingale collar is designed to provide better control over dogs that tend to slip out of traditional collars. It consists of two loops- a larger loop that sits on the dogs neck and a smaller loop designed to tighten when the dog pulls, reducing the risk of the dog slipping out of the collar. It can also serve as a communication tool between you and your dog when on walks and is a much more humane alternative to a metal choke chain. Traditionally used with sighthounds like greyhounds and whippets, they are now widely used with all breeds of dogs.
We offer two versions - one with no buckle and one with a side release buckle. The buckle offers a quicker method of putting the collar on and taking it off your dog. However if your dog is a very strong puller, the buckle will also be a weak point on the collar so in that case we recommend either upgrading to a metal or cobra buckle or purchasing the version with no buckle.
Here's how to use it correctly:
1. Choosing the Right Size
Measure your dog's neck to ensure a proper fit.
The collar should be snug but not too tight; you should be able to fit two fingers between the collar and your dog's neck.
2. Adjusting the Collar
Adjust the collar so that it tightens slightly when pulled but does not choke the dog.
Ensure that the collar can expand back to its original size when not under tension.
3. Proper Placement
Place the martingale collar high on your dog's neck, just behind the ears.
Avoid placing it too low, as this can cause discomfort and reduce effectiveness.
4. Attaching the Leash
Attach the leash to the ring that tightens the collar.
Ensure the leash is secure and that the collar is functioning properly before walking your dog.
5. Training and Supervision
Use the collar during training sessions to help with leash manners.
Always supervise your dog while wearing the martingale collar to prevent accidents. We don't necessarily recommend leaving this type of collar on all the type as there is a risk that the smaller loop could get caught on something.
6. Regular Checks
Regularly check the collar for wear and tear.
Make adjustments as needed to ensure a proper fit as your dog grows or loses weight.
Conclusion
Using a martingale collar correctly can enhance your control over your dog while ensuring their comfort and safety. Always prioritize proper fitting and supervision to maximize its effectiveness.
